Cuba's Wildlife: A Brief Introduction
Cuba
isn't known for its wildlife. This is why travelers are surprised by the
different types of animals that they end up seeing while here. If you will be
going to Cuba, make it a point to take part in some experiences where you can see
some of the wildlife. Here are some varieties of Cuba's wildlife to prepare to
see on a Cuban vacation.
Hawksbill
Turtle
These
turtles can be seen in Cuba from April through September. They visit this area
to lay their eggs every year around this time. If you want to see these
turtles, your best bet is to take part in a conservation project at
Guanahacabibes National Park. In addition to seeing some of the turtles, you'll
also be able to explore the park's caves and reefs.
Cuban
Parakeets
The
Cuban parakeet used to be very commonly seen in Cuba, but habit loss has
contributed to their presence being scarcer. They do like to nest in holes of
trees that have been made by Cuba's green woodpecker, but you can usually see
an abundance of them at a hotel called Finca La Belen.
French
Angelfish
Cuba is
a great place to snorkel due to its abundance and diversity of reef species. The
French angelfish is beautiful and, with an underwater camera, you can take some
pretty phenomenal pictures of them. Snorkelers tend to have a lot of luck
finding these beauties at Playa Pesquero.
Cuban
Crocodile
The
Cuban crocodile is a smaller species of crocodile since, on average, it only
measures around 7 feet in length. For comparison, average crocodiles tend to
average at least 17 feet in length. If you want to try to catch a glimpse of a
Cuban crocodile, head over to Zapata National Park. Onsite, there is a
crocodile farm that houses thousands of little babies. This allows visitors to
safely see these creatures, as seeing them in the wild is very dangerous due to
their more aggressive tendencies towards humans.
Dolphins
You can
interact with dolphins at the Acuario Delfinario. Featuring a large
dolphinarium, you can see large pools of dolphins and dolphin shows with a
visit to this special aquarium. There is also another area that houses sea lion
shows. Visitors have the opportunity to swim with dolphins for 30 minutes for
only 69 CUC.
